WSU Foundation honors President Emeritus Sam Smith

The Washington State University Foundation honored emeritus professor of plant pathology and eighth president of Washington State University Samuel H. Smith (1985-2000) as recipient of the 2016 Weldon B. Gibson Distinguished Volunteer Award. The award was presented during the Foundation’s annual Recognition Gala, September 30.

“From leading WSU’s first comprehensive fundraising campaign to creating campuses in Spokane, Tri-Cities, and Vancouver, Dr. Smith transformed the statewide presence and stature of Washington State University during his presidency,” said current WSU president Kirk H. Recruit suite named for Steve Gleason – “an inspiration”

The recruiting room inside the Cougar Football Complex at Washington State University has been named the Steve Gleason Recruit Suite in honor of the WSU Athletic Hall of Famer who played football and baseball 1995-99 and in the NFL 2000-07 for the New Orleans Saints.

“Pullman has been a big part of my development,” said Gleason, who was at WSU for the naming Wednesday. “I have amazing memories from my time here and I am excited I could be here in person today. Thanks again for including me. Go Cougs!”

Simpson Strong-Tie gift supports WSU engineering research

An annual $100,000 donation for the next eight years from Simpson Strong-Tie will support Washington State University construction and engineering research in the new PACCAR Environmental Technology Building on the WSU Pullman campus.

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) contributed $100,000 to the Dr. Elson S. Floyd Medical Education Founders Fund to honor the memory of a valued friend and community leader. Ed Schweitzer, founder and president of SEL, presented the gift to WSU Spokane Chancellor Lisa Brown at SEL’s world headquarters in Pullman, Wash., on Thursday afternoon.

Medical college fund established to honor late WSU president Elson S. Floyd

The Dr. Elson S. Floyd Medical Education Founders Fund was established to honor the university’s late president, who died following a battle with cancer.

Established by the Washington State University Foundation in accordance with the Floyd family’s wishes, the new fund will support the accreditation, implementation and operation of the new WSU College of Medicine. Distributions from the fund will be at the discretion of the college’s dean.

With gifts as small as $5 and as large as $25,000, Washington State University alumni, students, employees and friends rallied to participate in the university’s first official day of giving, which was held in conjunction with the celebration of WSU’s 125th anniversary.

The WSU Foundation confirmed today that 1,039 donors contributed $314,814 during #CougsGive125, which began at noon on March 26 and continued for 36 hours. #CougsGive125 challenged supporters to give $125,000 to support WSU students, faculty, research and programs.
