Summary of Duties:

The Vice Chancellor Development, WSU Spokane Health Sciences is responsible for developing, implementing and administering the WSU Health Sciences development efforts to support the Health Sciences’ annual fundraising operation while managing a development team and leading other development professionals, including the Senior Directors of Development in the colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Responsibilities include developing methods and strategies to accomplish fundraising goals, leading and directing a development team in support of philanthropic efforts, and planning and conducting programs designed to promote the public’s understanding of a Health Sciences’ activities and research with the aim of cultivating donors and raising money. This position builds collaborative partnership and relations with a variety of medical organizations, programs, and professionals across the state of Washington in support of the WSU Spokane Health Sciences mission.

These efforts may include, but are not limited to annual giving, major gift development, corporate and foundation relations, and planned gift identification and advancement. The Vice Chancellor Development, WSU Spokane Health Sciences has a personal fundraising responsibility of $2,500,000 or more. This position works collaboratively with the Washington State University Foundation development team in support of the Health Sciences and university strategic development goals.

 

Job Duties

Major Donor Cultivation, Solicitation, and Stewardship/Unit Leadership – 60%

  • Plan, articulate and execute a solid fundraising plan across the Health Sciences, including the WSU Spokane campus and in partnership with the colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
  • Work with the Vice President of Health Sciences and Chancellor of WSU Spokane, the Deans and the Senior Directors of the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Advancement staff, volunteers, faculty and others as appropriate to identify, cultivate, and solicit major gift prospects in support of the academic priorities of WSU Health Sciences and additional gifts to established endowments and for the establishment of new endowments.
  • Promote an environment for successful fundraising by providing ongoing information regarding fundraising initiatives and by preparing the Vice President of WSU Health Sciences and the WSU Spokane Chancellor and others to participate effectively in cultivation and solicitation activities.
  • Serve on the administrative staff (development cabinet) of the WSU Foundation, as well as the Vice President of WSU Health Sciences and WSU Spokane Chancellor’s Cabinet.
  • Provide leadership through timely and concise communication with the Vice President of WSU Health Sciences and WSU Spokane Chancellor and Foundation staff concerning development of fundraising and donor strategies, alumni relations, prospect and record management, event planning and budget monitoring.
  • Provide leadership to development staff by setting goals, mentoring, coaching and ultimately achieving unit fundraising goals.
  • Prepare and administer the operating budget of the WSU Health Sciences Advancement area(s). including the WSU Spokane campus and in partnership with the colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
  • Manage a portfolio comprised of 40-60 relationships rated $250K+.
  • Secure 8-10 documented major gift pledges ($25K+)/yr
  • Raise $2.5M-5M+/yr.
  • Open 12-24 solicitations/yr.
  • Plan 12-24 solicitations/yr.
  • Make 80-100 strategic contacts each year.
  • Prepare and submit timely contact reports. Prepare and submit written proposals, background reports and other development materials for use during donor cultivation and solicitation and ensure that all gifts are processed according to WSU Foundation policy.
  • Identify key donors/WSU alumni/influencers to enlist help with development initiatives.
  • Establish among supporters a shared vision of and investment in the successful implementation of the WSU Health Sciences strategic plan and campaign priorities.
  • Prepare volunteers to participate in the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gifts.
  • Collaborate with the WSU Foundation Gift Planning team in helping to advance major/planned gift arrangements that require tax or estate planning and collaborate with WSU Foundation Corporate & Foundation Relations teams in helping to advance major gift and/or sponsorship opportunities with corporate and foundation prospects.
  • Lead strategy around major gift donors for WSU Health Sciences in collaboration with Principal Giving, and/or team, and/or other WSU fundraising professionals.
  • Consult with and provide guidance to individual faculty members regarding philanthropic grants and gifts.
  • Manage budget for the WSU Health Sciences advancement office.

 Team Management and Mentorship – 20%

  • Manage team performance, particularly as it relates to WSU Health Sciences’ fundraising goals.
  • Provide mentorship to fundraisers on their team, including the colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, modeling fund raising best practices and supporting professional development opportunities/initiatives when possible and/or appropriate.

 Unit Specific Responsibilities – 15%

  • Work with the Vice President of WSU Health Sciences and WSU Spokane Chancellor, WSU Foundation personnel and support staff to plan and develop informative, inspirational, timely communications with internal and external constituencies in support of development objectives.
  • Develop philanthropic communications strategy, unit case statements and fundraising priorities for WSU Health Sciences with senior development director colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Develop appropriate events for fundraising and stewardship, partnering with appropriate colleagues on logistics and event execution.
  • Provide input and oversee the development of WSU Health Sciences’ philanthropic marketing and branding materials.
  • Represent WSU Health Sciences and the University when meeting friends, donors, influencers, and alumni of the institution.Builds collaborative partnership and relations with a variety of medical organizations, programs, and professionals in support of the campus mission and objectives.
  • Collect and analyze information from graduates of the colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, sharing such information with Foundation research and records professionals.
  • Assist administrators in defining the role of advisory board(s)/councils, identifying and orienting board/council members on philanthropic and engagement activities, setting or providing input on agendas, and evaluating board/council performance if applicable.
  • Prepare volunteers to participate in assessment, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of gifts.

Position Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree and seven (7) years of progressively responsible full-time professional fundraising or consultative sales experience within a complex organization, which includes at least five (5) years as a unit director or equivalent leadership experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Require one year of Advancement experience within higher education or similar organization.
  • Consultative sales are defined as the sale of real estate, industrial equipment, vehicles, custom services, or bulk commodities, which include long term relationships between salespeople and clients. Consultative sales positions are typically compensated on a commission basis and have the authority to negotiate the terms and conditions of individual sales with customers.
  • Experience demonstrating strong interpersonal skills in establishing and maintaining internal and external relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to cultivate, develop and steward client/donor relationships
  • Understanding of proposal development and writing, fundraising and/or client development principles and techniques; project management skills; and relevant event planning/management.
  • Demonstrated success in proposal writing and submission.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid driver’s license at time of hire.
  • Evening and weekend work required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fundraising experience closing major gifts of $500,000 and above.
  • Proven experience motivating and managing individuals and teams for maximum performance.
  • Prior experience working with academic and administration leadership.
  • Evidence of ability to plan and execute a fundraising project from conception to realization.
  • Experience in the medical field or healthcare.
