Holiday Hours & End-of-Year Giving

It’s that time of year again—time to make memorable moments with family and friends. As you prepare for the holidays, consider the year-end giving tips below. We know how important the last few days of 2023 will be to meet tax deadlines, and we are here to help make the process as streamlined as possible.

Please note the WSU Foundation’s hours of operation through the end of the year:

Dec. 1 – Dec. 23: Normal operation (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)

Dec. 25 – Dec. 26: Closed.

Dec. 27 – Dec. 29: Although Washington State University and the WSU Foundation will be closed on these dates, WSU Foundation Gift Accounting, and Gift Planning staff, will be available by phone from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you would like to give a gift of appreciated stock, or discuss your year-end giving plans to benefit WSU, please call 800-448-2978 or 509-335-1686.

Dec. 30 – Jan. 1: Closed.

Jan. 2: Resume normal operations.

Year-End Giving

Remember, gifts need to be made by Dec. 31 to help reduce your 2023 taxable income. Please keep the following in mind and consult your tax advisor for specific details:

For a gift to be complete during the 2023 tax year:

  • Make sure your gift is received by the WSU Foundation or postmarked no later than Dec. 31, 2023. Please note, that the date on the actual check or money order is not recognized by the IRS as proof of your intent to give on a particular date.
  • Making a gift online using the WSU Foundation’s secure site is an easy way to make your year-end gift using a credit or debit card any time. To receive a 2023 charitable income tax deduction, credit card gifts must be processed against your account in 2023. Complete your online gift on or before 11:59 p.m. (PST) on December 31, 2023. The WSU Foundation accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. The date your account is debited is considered the date of the donation.
  • Gifts of Stock: Consider making a simple and tax-wise gift of appreciated stock. Please note that mutual fund shares may take several weeks to transfer, and the gift is not considered complete until the shares are received in the WSU Foundation’s brokerage account. To discuss your year-end gift to WSU, please call (800) 448 2978 or (509) 335 1686, Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm.
  • Gifts by IRAs/Qualified Charitable Distributions: (QCDs): Please ensure your IRA administrator postmarks the distribution by December 31st; if you are sending the IRA administrator’s distribution, it must postmarked by December 31st; and for those IRAs with check writing privileges, the check needs to arrive in plenty of time for us to receive, cash, and clear the bank by December 31st. Please make sure your IRA administrator notes your name on the check or letter accompanying the gift so that it can be processed correctly. Checks should be mailed directly to the WSU Foundation. Please contact the Gift Planning team at gpoffice@wsu.edu or 509-335-7883 if you have any questions.
  • Gift Planning Team Availability. During the holiday closure week of December 27-29, Gift Planning will be available to answer your estate and asset-based gift questions. You can reach Liz Ryan on December 27th at (206) 770-6062 or lizryan@wsu.edu. You can reach Becky Magnuson on December 28th at (509) 335-2575 or rebecca.magnuson@wsu.edu. You can reach Amanto Marcotulli on December 29th at (503) 806-3562 or amanto.marcotulli@wsu.edu.

Gifts by check or money order may be mailed to:

WSU Foundation
PO Box 641927
Pullman, WA 99164-1927

Note: During the holidays, gifts may be hand-delivered to the WSU Foundation Town Centre on December 27-29 between 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. We will not be accepting hand-delivered gifts on December 25 or December 26.
