Our family is blessed with two wonderful granddaughters, Anna and Petra Rider. Petra recently spent a week at Seattle Children’s Hospital and Medical Center under the care of excellent medical staff. Several of the nurses were graduates of the WSU College of Nursing. We were all so happy with the caregivers, and with Petra’s successful treatment and recovery, that we decided to honor the nursing staff by creating an endowment in the college, to help attract the best students and graduate even more of the best-trained nurses in the world.

Graduating from high school in January enabled me to earn the money for my first year of college. Not being able to earn enough money for my sophomore year I thought I would have to drop out. Then the Dr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Hathaway came to my rescue. They loaned me the money to complete my college education to supplant what I earned working for them during the summers and I also worked in the dining hall at Davis and cleaned houses. Everything I have accomplished I owe to Dr. and Mrs. Hathaway. I am passing it forward by setting up this scholarship in their name so other students who need financial help will have some available.
