General Scholarships

Campaign Goal: $30 Million

At the heart of WSU’s historic mandate as Washington’s land-grant institution is
the belief that every qualified student deserves an opportunity to pursue higher
education—without regard to background or financial ability. In an era of tightened
budgets, however, students and their families are now shouldering much more of
the financial burden for college tuition and expenses than previous generations
did. Your generous partnership today provides opportunities for this new wave of
scholars as together we build WSU into one of the nation’s leading public research
universities.

The implications of such a partnership are clear. With financial assistance and
scholarship funding, students realize the freedom to participate fully in on-campus
leadership opportunities, advanced research, academic clubs, and civic
engagement. Scholarships also represent an affirmation, a vote of confidence that
powerfully influences our ability to recruit and retain students all the way through
to graduation.

College graduates statistically live longer and healthier lives, participate more fully
in community service and leadership roles, experience greater job satisfaction, and
rely far less on government assistance. Studies also confirm they are eventually
able to provide better educational opportunities for their children. So by facilitating
a young person’s learning experience, we help create a ripple effect that not only
impacts families for generations but also improves the well-being of entire
communities. In this way we meet the future head-on, preparing future leaders for
global challenges yet unimagined.

Through the Campaign for Washington State University, we seek to strengthen
existing scholarships and open new doors of opportunity for deserving scholars.
Meeting our campaign goal of $30 million in general scholarships ($182 million in
scholarships university-wide) helps bring a “big idea” to life by fulfilling the promise
of an affordable, accessible education. And your continued support is a testament
to a shared, unshaken conviction that higher education should never be just a
privilege for the very few but, rather, an opportunity within the grasp of every
student who wants to build a better life and a better world.

We invite you to join us as we build WSU’s leadership position through these targeted
giving opportunities. Your partnership with general scholarships is invaluable
and supports the success of all WSU students. General scholarships are flexible
and are our best opportunity to bridge the gap for any student who may need a
financial boost to continue pursuing an education. Unit-specific scholarships also
help recruit and retain students in specific majors.
